These courses are designed for students who have at least a strong Intermediate level of English and who wish to study at an educational institution in the UK.
At St Martins we take an integrated approach to our English for Academic Purposes programmes. Since the four skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking are rarely used in isolation, our syllabus has been developed in line with the Trinity College London ISE syllabus which requires students to use skills in conjunction with each other. For example, after reading a text normally this information is then relayed either in spoken or written form, and generally, when someone is speaking someone else is listening simultaneously, and perhaps also making notes at the same time. Therefore, our syllabus is designed to incorporate integrated tasks into our programmes.
Our courses are not only designed to develop and expand academic English ability, study skills and research skills, but also to focus on individual needs and interests. As well as the more traditional approach to AEP teaching we also include opportunities for individual learners to begin to pursue their own interests or specialism.
Over the duration of the course students will carry out several pieces of research in order to compile a portfolio of their own original work, which, together with a written timed examination and oral interview, will form the basis for a final external assessment.
The nature of the ISE examinations allows students to select some of the content of their own examination giving them an active role in and responsibility for the direction of the interaction, unlike many other examinations. This is a motivational tool for the learner as it allows them to impart their knowledge, redresses the ‘power’ balance of the examination process and therefore builds overall confidence and competence.
