Speaking and Listening skills are vital to communicate successfully in English but traditionally these skills are often neglected in classrooms around the world. Examinations which focus on grammar and accuracy alone can mean that the type of teaching delivered may leave the learner with a good knowledge of grammar but little or no ability to actually use the language in the course of genuine spontaneous communication.
At St Martins, we believe in developing every individual student’s communicative ability, particularly through speaking and listening. We keep our classes small so that each student has the maximum opportunity to use language, and to enable individual attention from the tutor. Conversation sessions with a native speaker are an optional extra at St Martins which provide more occasions for students to develop the English learnt in class in a safe and friendly environment.
Our tutors understand the effects of the learner’s first language on learning English and are trained to tailor classes to meet the needs of all different language speakers, particularly in the area of pronunciation, since this is the key to being understood. Therefore, pronunciation teaching is an integral part of our classroom teaching.
Our syllabus is also designed to include British Life and Culture sessions with guided learning and self-study tasks which will help to develop fluency as well as accuracy and to develop study skills, autonomy and confidence in preparation for further study and/or future career development.
As well as routine progress tests and tutorial sessions, another regular and differentiating feature of our Communicative English programme is mock oral interviewing. These sessions are conducted by trained and qualified EFL examiners in addition to classroom teaching time. This allows students the opportunity to have practical experience of one-to-one sessions with a native-English speaking examiner, receive extra feedback on their performance as well as their current level of ability, as well as receiving expert guidance for future improvement.
